The team rode perfectly today. We let a small break go off the front and Bling and Gossy then rode to keep the break well and truly in check. We were confident that the race would come back together for the final.
It was up to Durbo and Mat to make sure that we were well placed going into the bottom of the Corkscrew and then the plan was for myself, Clarkey and Daryl to get over the climb in the front group and be there for the final. Everyone rode really well today.
On the climb up the Corkscrew, Cadel and Richie accelerated on the first steep part of the climb. I bided my time a little and then went to go across at the last part of the steep section. However as I accelerated so did Cadel. I rode across to Richie and by this time Cadel had a small gap and continued to ride away from the two of us up the final part of the climb.
Richie and I worked well together in the initial parts of the descent and then when I saw that a group was coming up behind, I decided it was better to wait for some team support. Daryl was in that group and once they joined us he chased hard. He was able to bring the gap down to 15 seconds by the finish and our group sprinted for second place. I finished in 5th place with Daryl in 9th.
I have now dropped back to second on GC, only 12 seconds behind Cadel. We are well and truly still in contention for the overall classification however we will have our work cut out for us in the next couple of days.
